middle aged canadian woman

A middle-age woman from Canada came to me with complaints regarding thyroid issues, mood swings, depression, greying of hair.  She also states that she presented with thyroid problems 30 or more years ago that required removal of her thyroid which may have been prevented if she had proper individualized treatment before that time.

Case Study #1

Is your Medical Doctor conducting tests on tissues like hair mineral analysis and others? Does your MD dedicate their time to analyzing your lifestyle, diet (including what you consume), organ function, heavy metal levels, and various other factors? Do they conduct tests on vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and other elements like we do in this case study? Hardly any do, primarily because their training focuses on acute care and disregards significant factors such as lifestyle, cellular health, and many others.

#3 – SUMMARY

Main points collected from case study:

  • Female, 60 years old
  • 5'5" height and 170 lbs weight
  • Occupation: Custodian
  • Past alt/med experience: chiropractors, occupational therapists, physio-therapists

Diagnosis Vs Healthy
What's The Difference?
"Diagnosis": "1 ounce of prevention is worth 1 pound of cure" is when your body breaks down the point to fit a specific criteria for 1 or more "dis-eases" to be labelled and then symptoms managed often with drugs and surgeries but rarely getting to the cause of the problem and negative feedback loops never stopped. This is the most expensive outcome.
Healthy: in its present definition, refers to the remarkable ability of biological systems to maintain stability while adapting to fluctuating external circumstances. Here you experience excellent cognitive and physical abilities. The primary method of achieving this is through prevention using a cellular nutritional approach called "medical nutrition." This is the lowest-cost outcome.

Family History

Mother: high cholesterol, heart disease, arthritis, alzheimer's disease, migraines, chronic constipation,

Father: heart disease, arthritis, thyroid disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia

Siblings; heart disease

  1. Summary of Analysis/Contributing Factors

Main Concerns of Client

  • Short sleep duration & often poor, broken sleep
  • Sugar cravings but maintain cessation from sugar cravings by avoiding them.
  • Lower back pain from scoliosis
  • Have hiatal hernia likely related to scoliosis
  • Very excessive usage of vaporizer with little to no nicotine -- but contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, food flavoring.
  • New, frequent use of very low dose mirtazipine (remeron) for sleep at 3.5 mg nightly along with marijuana tincture

All Causes and Effects relevant to the client

Liver/Gallbladder (B3: 25)

  • A sluggish liver or gall bladder means that not enough bile reaches the duodenum. The role of bile is to emulsify fats into molecules that are small enough for pancreatic lipase to act on them. Bile, is an anti- constipation intestinal lubricant, sterilizes bacteria, is necessary for the absorption of Vitamins A, D, E and K (F.1 - F.3) plus EFA’s (A.3), and facilitates mineral absorption.

Causes:

  • a diet high in refined carbohydrates ■ viral hepatitis
  • Alcohol, as we know, when taken in large quantities over a long period, will cause cirrhosis of the liver. ■ Psychologically, the liver has become known and accepted as the seat of suppressed anger in need of release.
  • low EFAs (A.3) and hormones, arterial plaqueing, pale, greasy stools that float
  • An under-functioning liver/gall bladder (B.3) will interfere with the absorption of essential fatty acids (A.3) and with the metabolism of the fat-soluble vitamins A (F.1), D (F.2) and E (F.3) and K

Recommendations:

  • reduction of environmental toxins, Avoiding fatty foods is probably the most obvious recommendation. However, all ingested toxins will affect the liver: poor quality food, rancid junk food, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, prescription drugs, etc.

 Sugar Excess (C1: 35)

  • The reason we suffer from such strong sugar cravings comes down to a hormone called leptin, which regulates your craving for sweet foods. When sugar is metabolized and stored as fat, it releases excessive amounts of leptin into your blood. Too much leptin, and you become resistant to it. Once that happens, your body has difficulty communicating to your brain that you aren’t hungry. Combine that with the sugar telling your brain that all you want is another cake, cookie or pastry, and you end up eating even more sugar, which is stored as more fat, which releases more leptin. And so on and so on.
  • The human body was designed to consume only foods from nature, in which concentrated sugars are relatively scarce. Sugar goes by many names: white sugar, brown sugar, maple, corn and agave syrup, honey, molasses, Sukanat and anything that ends in “ose.” ■ None of these are important to a healthy diet. Some may be tolerated only as a rare, occasional treat. ■ The average child eats 27 teaspoons of sugar per day. One can of pop has 8-12 teaspoons of sugar in it. Go to sugarstacks.com to search sugar content of foods

Causes:

  • over-consumption in our SAD (Standard American Diet)

Effects:

  • dental cavities/caries ■ overweight ■ nervousness, hyperactivity, anxiety or depression, cravings, addictions, yeast infections, candidiasis, recurring infections, ■ high cholesterol in blood, high triglycerides, gallstones, gout, or kidney stones.

Recommendations:

  • Re-mineralization of a body is the re establishing of a connection to Mother Earth. When this connection is re-established and the earth is again flowing through us in the way of minerals and other nutrients, our destructive ways of attaining reassurance have been replaced with a sense of inner security, confidence and stability.
  • As Doreen Virtue suggests in her book Constant Craving, sugar cravings are a need for reassurance, pleasure and/or reward - a reminder to us that "we are alright, we are okay and that we are doing a good job"—all the affirmations that we may look to a mother to provide to us.
  • Say no to “low-fat” or “fat-free”: When trying to kick strong sugar cravings, you need to be label conscious. Pay extra attention to the sugar content of your favorite low-fat and fat-free foods. They may be doing you more harm than good. When fat is removed from food, so is all the good flavor! To compensate for the lost flavor, manufacturers put in “flavors.” That’s quite a vague ingredient. You end up not even knowing what has been added to the food. Low fat can often mean sugar is added to replace the fat, as is the case in low fat mayonnaise and many salad dressings on the store shelves. Try to avoid sweetening foods. The goal is to retrain the palate not to want sweet things.

Chromium Deficiency (E2: 60)

  • Chromium was discovered in France in the late 1790s, but it took until the 1960s before it was recognized as being an important trace element. ■ This mineral is needed for the production of insulin and regulation of blood sugar. ■ It is an essential component of the Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) and thus is important for carbohydrate metabolism, but only a very small quantity is required. ■ In excess, chromium may inhibit rather than enhance insulin activity. ■ Tissue levels of chromium tend to decrease with age and with a SAD lifestyle, which may both be contributing factors in the increase of adult-onset diabetes. Which has risen more than six-fold in the last fifty years.

Causes:

  • A diet high in sugars and processed foods predisposes some people to chromium deficiency and is associated with pancreas malfunction (see pancreas, J.5) and the onset of diabetes and hypoglycemia (K.4).

Effects:

  • intolerance to alcohol ■ glucose intolerance, hypoglycemia, diabetes ■ cravings for sugars or starches
  • Because of its function in the regulation of blood sugar, lack of chromium is linked to obesity, because of its function in the regulation of blood sugar. However, caution should be observed in using this mineral for weight loss. ■ People with chromium deficiency are known to have a ‘sweet tooth.’ ■ A deficiency of chromium as well as choline (H.1) and circulation (K.3) is a good indicator of elevated blood cholesterol.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid white processed flour (and products made with it) which are stripped of chromium. Replace it with whole grains.
  • Best food sources: meat, shellfish, clams, brewer’s yeast, whole grain cereals, potato skins, oysters, apples, bananas, and spinach Note: Fruits, vegetables, and dairy have very low chromium concentrations.
  • Avoid sugars. Include chromium in the diet as a tablet supplement only if necessary and as part of a mineral complex. When any single mineral is taken in high dosage it impairs the absorption of other minerals.
  • The picolinate form is not recommended. It is obtained from ground up lobster shells. It absorbs 10X faster, but can also excrete faster through the kidneys, causing a strain on the kidneys and also creating more of a deficiency in the end. Also contraindicated with lobster allergies.

Bioflavonoid Deficiency (H2: 30)

  • Bioflavonoids are especially potent antioxidants and metal chelators ■ chemical compounds that plants produce to protect themselves from parasites, bacteria and cell injury ■ More than 4,000 chemically unique flavonoids are known, occurring in fruits, vegetables, spices, seeds, nuts, flowers and bark. ■ Certain flavonoids in fruits and vegetables have much greater antioxidant activity than vitamins A (F.1), C (G.9) and E (F.3) or beta-carotene. In fact, flavonoids protect these antioxidant vitamins from oxidative damage.

Causes:

  • not enough fruits and vegetable sources
  • bleed easily (gums, nosebleeds, cuts) ■ bruise easily ■ tiny red blood spots on skin ■ varicose veins, hemorrhoid
  • inflamed, swollen joints ■ FEMALE, miscarriages, threatened miscarriages heavy & prolonged menstrual bleeding.

Recommendations:

  • fruits, berries, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes

Pituitary Insufficiency (J8: 36)

  • The pituitary is a master gland of the endocrine system. Through a complicated feedback system, it controls the distribution of hormones to other hormone secreting organs in the system, such as the ovaries (see gonads, J.3), pancreas (J.5), adrenals (J.1), thyroid (J.6), parathyroid, and pineal gland.
  • A long pituitary line often indicates an end stage of “burn out”, or may accompany menopausal changes. It responds well to full nutrition.
  • The pituitary gland sits above the optic chiasma, which is the meeting place of the optic nerves as they emerge from the eyes. It consists of two lobes, anterior and posterior, both of which secrete different hormones.
  • Physically, it is primarily controlled by the hypothalamus gland which sits above it and sends it messages via the blood stream and nervous system. The information relayed encompasses temperature, emotions, sleep, defense mechanisms, thirst, sexual needs and hunger. When any of these functions is recorded as being abnormal, the pituitary will give the signal for the release of hormones.

Causes:

  • electromagnetic radiation from electrical outlets, or appliances placed too close to the head while, sleeping, cell phones, mobile phones, geopathic stress, a lack of nurturing of one’s self or the ignoring of one's own intuition and following impulses of the physica.

Effects:

  • pain in left little finger, pain in left upper neck, overweight from waist up and waist down, edema swelling including under the eyes, cold hands and feet and cold all over, FEMALE: Loss of menstrual function, Emotions that affect the pituitary include inadequacy and feeling out of control - feelings often dominate over logic and one may have a moody, changeable temperament.

Recommendations:

  • A certain amount of pituitary stress is common with menopause, and signals that nutritional support is required.
  • In addition to a wholesome diet, the recommended nutrients are essential fatty acids (A.3) (evening primrose oil or flax seed oil), Vitamin E (F.3), B's (G.1-G.8), and manganese (D.5). A female glandular or pituitary concentrate is also recommended

 Food Log Based Diet Summary:

 Water

  • Client not consuming enough water. Must increase.

Fresh fruit and vegetables/active enzymes

  • bananas, peas , vegetables, fruit - needs to increase substantially.

Nutrient dense foods

  • According to food log, there is a good amount of nutrient-rich foods and drinks, with exception of coffee.

Animal meats

Chicken is also problematic, D'Adamo says. He encourages eating green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and low-fat dairy.

Fibre

  • Consuming sufficient fiber

EFAs

  • Not consuming sufficient EFAs

Protein

  • Client not consuming enough varied protein sources. Need to increase.

Probiotics

  • Not consuming enough probiotic sources

Whole grains

  • Since she is blood type B, it's best to avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds.

Legumes

  • Not consuming sufficient legumes, but be careful: You should also avoid certain varieties of beans, including garbanzo beans and black beans if you have type B positive blood.

Processed food

  • Consuming small amounts of processed foods.

Refined grains

  • Consuming too much refined grains such as "flat bread" but it wasn't indicated what type of flat bread. Oats and rice are good.

Sugar

  • Keep sugar intake grams to zero or very little.
  • Even water melon could contribute to high sugar intake especially in regards to Glycemic Load and Glycemic Index.

Dairy

  • Little to no dairy products being consumed -- food log indicates mainly coffee mixed with dairy products.

Beverages

  • Coffee is not the best to consume as it can aggravate adrenals, thyroid and ohers, and should be eliminated with proper lifestyle/diet/supplement regime. Client also states she adds milk to the coffee.
  • Green tea is also not the best but it is probably healthier than coffee, since we do not add sugar and milk products to as we do to coffee.

Root Causes

  • lack of education
  • Existing thyroid problems
  • Existing thyroid medications
  • Work position being around cleaning substances
  • Family genetic disease history
  • Imbalance of existing supplements
  • Not enough water intake.
  • Client reports 4 amalgam fillings & 1 root canal
  • Client is near electric transformers
  • Past car accidents & physical traumas

Stress- possible causes:

  • Late night sleep starts
  • past trauma: loss of loved ones, deaths, relationship breakups, employment loss.

DIet Recommendations:

  • Type B blood: Avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds.
  • Chicken is also problematic for blood type B. I encourage eating green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and low-fat dairy. Chicken contains a Blood Type B agglutinating lectin in its muscle tissue. Although chicken is a lean meat, the issue is the power of an agglutinating lectin attacking your bloodstream and the potential for it to lead to strokes and immune disorders. Replace chicken with highly beneficial foods such as goat, lamb, mutton, rabbit and venison.
  • Include very high EPA fish oil into diet such from fresh wild fish or supplementation. The high cost of fish is usually an inhibiting factor with many people.
  • More sulfur in the diet that includes onions, garlic and many others on top of sulphur rich supplements and/or precursor supplements.
  • Subscribe to "anti-inflammation diet" which is emphasizes foods that are high in antioxidants, monounsaturated fats, and omega-3 fatty acids, all of which help reduce inflammation. Keeping your diet low in sugar further reduces the inflammatory fires by keeping blood-sugar levels in check.
  • Foods to Avoid: Loading up on junk foods, high-fat meats, sugar, and highly processed foods may increase the potential for inflammation in your body. Reduce your consumption of trans-fats and saturated fats by cutting back on highly processed foods, red meats, and high-fat processed meats such as bacon and sausage. Cut back on refined white flours in bread and pasta. Eliminate added sugars by decreasing your consumption of sugary sodas, pastries, candy, rich desserts, and pre-sweetened cereals.
  • Try to consume 1 cup walnuts before bed as this helps with sleep along with calcium & magnesium together. If Cal/mag needs water, then consume walnuts about 30 minutes before or after.
  • Purchase HMF 500 for probiotic supplementation increase to ameliorate gut health.
  • Based on client's height, weight, activity level and climate, the client should consume approximately 3.3 liters of water per day. They can add small amounts of sodium and sweetener such as Stevia to make it more palatable.
  • Only sip small amount of water during meal -- wait 1 to 2 hours after meal to drink larger amounts of water.
  • When consuming water only consume maximum 120 mililiters per 30 minutes as more than this the body will excrete without absorbing.
  • Slowly substitute coffee for many things including: boiled ginger shreds in water, yerba mate, as well as chicory root.
  • Wait 4 to 5 hours between each major meal. If snacks are needed, try to use unrefined food with a very small amount of water.

Here are steps to properly gauge how much Betaine HCL you need

  • Eat a meal that contains at least 15-20grams of protein (about 4-6ounces of meat).
  • Start by taking 1 pill (650mg or less) of Betaine HCL during the beginning of the meal.
  • Finish the meal as normal and observe your body for any changes in feeling associated with the stomach and belly button area. Things to look for: heaviness, hotness, burning, or other GI distress.
  • Stay at this dosage of 1 pill for another day of meals with protein and if you don’t notice anything on the 3rd day, try 2 pills.
  • Stay there for another day and then try 3 pills.
  • Keep increasing the number of pills taken with each meal until you notice some GI discomfort described in step #3.
  • When this happens, you will know your ideal Betaine HCL dosage is 1 pill less. For example, if you felt the discomfort going from 5 pills to 6 pills, then 5 pills is your proper dosage for a normal meal.:
  • Pure Betaine HCL can be purchased on bulk bags (to be made into capsules yourself) online or you can purchase more expensive, pre-formed capsuled ones in retail stores. It can also be combined with other enzyme formulas.

Lifestyle recommendations:

  • If working as custodian, it may be good idea to try to obtain personal protective equipment to help mitigate cleaning substances being inhaled or absorpbed into body.
  • Earthing of feet on ground/soil. This means removing shoes and place feet on ground; preferably on the soil for at least 10 to 30 minutes.
  • Perform yoga or some other meditation exercises to try to relax. A good example is https://yogawithadriene.com/.
  • You may also try "Laughter Yoga" from laughteryoga.org
  • Use incense at night or infuser
  • If possible, try to obtain membership at local gym for pool usage and perform waer aerobics since this is very low impact for the client who sustained injuries in the past.
  • Practice daily affirmations & practice gratitude. Such affirmations could be reminders on printer paper on your wall to remember to take supplements, cut out refined foods. On these reminders print out life affirming words such as "I am worth it" and many others.
  • If possible, try to head to bed earlier than current schedule to coincide with the fall of the sun in the night time hours.
  • Since client manifests thyroid problems and consumes medication for it, it's best to avoid electrical equipment
  • Slowly include daily walking with arms moving up and down with each step, as well as deep breathing with each step. Include audio book or relaxation music while walking on headphones.
  • Muscle strengthening exercises such as the 4 minute workout found on sources such as Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRDGlIJTVt8

6. Session 1 protocols:

Objectives:

  • Improve digestion
  • Reduce cravings for sugar

Supplementation (product name, exact dosage & when to take)

  • Add Epsom salts nightly to hot water for foot bath
  • Kirkland Signature Vitamin C 1000 mg tablets taken before breakfast, before lunch, and before supper.
    • If cost is a factor, one can order Vitamin C powder from ingredientdepot.com in large containers & mix with potassium bicarbonate to reduce the acid. The ratio is 2 parts vitamin C powder with 1 part potassium bicarbonate. For example: 1/2 teaspoon vitamin C powder mixed in small amount of water with 1/4 teaspoon potassium bicarbonate. This will fizz and should be consumed quickly. In morning, mid afternoon and then night time. Only take small amount of Vitamin C powder out into another container for frequent opening, with dessicant packs to absorb moisture in large and small containers.

  • Calcium/Magnesium ratio in optimal form, example: CAL-MAG CITRATE (EFFERVESCENT POWDER) by Thorne research or similar

Reasons for supplement recommendations

Some of these supplements have already been declared by the client as being current ones. I have indicated below which ones could probably have their dosages changed.

It should also be noted to try to consume the most bio-available and more easily absorbed form of certain elements such as magnesium, calcium and many others along with food that may not contain or be absorbed by the body easily.

One can also obtain supplement powders from source such as bulksupplements.com and mix them into smoothies or make your own capsules with manual capsule machine.

  • Client presently consuming 1000 mg daily as per chart.
  • Increase EPA to 3000 mg daily for 2 months
  • One could also try to obtain "seal oil" which is relatively new and contains high amounts of EPA.

Probiotics (HMF 500)

  • HMF 500 supplies “good” bacteria
  • helps reduce intestinal dysbiosis
  • helps restore levels of B-vitamins
  • acts as a natural antibiotic to help reduce infections
  • 1 sachet daily
  • Addresses many issues such as excess lactic bacteria as indicated in chart.

Water

  • acts as a solvent in the body to improve transportation of nutrients and hormones in

the body

  • helps flush toxins and wastes from the body

  • Harder to obtain sufficient vitamin B12 in virtually all foods
  • Benefits especially the nervous system including intestinal & gut health along with many others.
  • Optimal levels of all nutrients are key to optimal functioning.

B100 Complex (Webber Naturals)

  • Keeps consistent increased level of B Vitamins along with B12

 Vitamin D3

  • Currently consuming 250 IU daily
  • Increase to 3000 IU daily due to many factors including already present absorption deficiency by oral route along with lack of sunlight during winter months.

Magnesium & Calcium (ratios)

  • As per client chart, they are consuming 500 mg magnesium daily.
  • Should be paired with calcium in a ratio. This ratio should be 2 to 1; for instance: if client consumes 500 mg calcium, should be paired with 250 mg magnesium in bio-available form.
  • Forms of elements is also important, and we should strive to consume magnesium and calcium citrate in the above ratios when consumed in oral format.

Co-Q10

  • Recommended to be taken with largest meal
  • Keep at client's current stated dosage which is 200mg and 400 mg as stated in client statement form.

Zinc

  • Client already taking 50 mg amount which is sufficient

Selenium

  • If client increases food intake of more unrefined foods, then selenium dosage could be reduced or eliminated.
  • Best to keep at current dosage and gradually lessen it as increases of the above occur.
